  • Is microdosing safe?
Taking reasonable (not extremely high) doses of psilocybin has been proven to be completely safe. Psilocybin is statistically the safest scheduled drug. Drug research shows that it is one of the safest substances you can find, both biochemically and socially. It is exponentially safer than alcohol. While the potential for risk does exist it is marginal compared to other drugs. A growing number of clinical human trials are now highlighting the fact that psilocybin mushrooms are not only safe, but have profound medical, therapeutic and psychological benefits. Psilocybin mushrooms are still drugs and therefore carry inherent risk potential when abused or taken irresponsibly. The worst thing that can happen when responsibly microdosing psilicybin is mild temporary discomfort, often in the form of emotional turbulence, anxiety or unease. This is largely due to psilocybin's "amplifying effect"- meaning that it amplifies your current mood rather than acting as a stimulant or numbing agent. For this reason, it's important to assess your mindset before consuming a microdose. Microdosing represents the act of taking an extremely safe substance at a very small dosage.
  • Are mushroom microdoses legal?
Psilocybin mushrooms are still illegal to buy, possess and grow in many countries. In some countries they are completely legal, while in other countries the laws are more moderate or not strictly enforced. Make sure you’re aware of your local laws before you decide to microdose. Psilocybin is a profound, life-giving substance, and a miracle of the natural world. It can be found in hundreds of species of fungi all over the world. Psilocybin mushrooms have a long history of traditional use, beginning with groups of aboriginal Australians tens of thousands of years ago, and continuing to Mesoamerican cultures whose descendants still use psilocybin to this day. It’s strange, unfounded, and indeed nonsensical that these common fungi have been deemed illegal in many countries. The prohibition of psilocybin mushrooms dates back to the drug war of the 60s and 70s. Like LSD, psilocybin was seen as a psychedelic drug that was powering the counterculture movement of the time. Thus, it was deemed dangerous to the status quo and turned into a scapegoat in order to suppress freedom, creativity and free thought, and to retain government power and control. Psilocybin mushrooms are ultimately a tool for growing more peaceful individuals and a more peaceful society. This, however, is not good for business. There is no science or legitimate reasoning behind the prohibition of psilocybin mushrooms. There is no evidence of short-term or long-term harm from the occasional, responsible use of psilocybin mushrooms. In fact, a growing body of evidence suggests that psilocybin and other psychedelics can be used to effectively treat conditions such as chronic depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, among other possible applications. Unfortunately, drug policy is built on fear and stereotypes, not on compassion, creativity and reason. This means that in most countries worldwide, you can go to prison for using a harmless, beneficial, naturally-occurring substance, and harming no one in the process. How backwards is that? Thankfully, international drug policy is slowly progressing as science reveals more and more potential therapeutic uses for psychedelics. Ultimately, you are an autonomous, free human being who has the right to partake in a substance that you believe may be beneficial to your body, mind and soul.
  • What is microdosing?
Taking a small amount of a psychedelic substance, roughly 10% of a recreational dose. The effect is subtle and sub-perceptual, and is not accompanied by the altered visual field that psychedelics at higher dosages are known to induce.
  • What microdosing schedule should I follow?
One of the most common protocols is the Fadiman Protocol (from James Fadiman), which suggests taking a microdose every 3rd day (ex. Mon-Thurs-Sun-Wed-etc). This is generally an effective method for people to get a feel for microdosing. Another common protocol comes from Paul Stamets who suggests taking a microdose every day for four days, then taking three days off. The idea is that the three days off helps to prevent building up a tolerance and thereby reducing the effectiveness of the mushrooms. (The idea that one can build up a tolerance to sub-perceptual mushroom dosages is debatable.) For most people, morning is an ideal time to microdose so that the effects will last throughout the day. Some people report positive experiences taking microdoses in the morning before eating solid food. Whichever schedule one chooses, it is generally recommended to pay attention to the changes in your life and momentary experiences on your dose days as well as on your off days. Monitoring in this way will help you fine-tune your microdosing schedule, and learn how to respectfully and effectively microdose. Over time, you may begin to experience and notice the beneficial cumulative effects of microdosing even on your off days. Many people report experiencing benefits on their off days, especially on the day immediately following a dose day. After a few weeks or months of experimenting with microdosing, you might develop your own schedule or routine. For example, a software developer may microdose on days when they require a high degree of focus and problem-solving ability. Or a painter may microdose on a day when they plan to do a lot of painting, providing a gentle boost in creativity, lateral thinking and the ability to enter a state of flow. Some find it beneficial to leverage microdosing as an occasional advantage rather than a consistent ritual like coffee.
  • What are the benefits of microdosing?
Benefits of microdosing span a wide range of areas, from increased focus, energy and creativity, to reduced anxiety and depression, to an improved sense of perspective and overall wellbeing. Many individuals who incorporate microdosing into their weekly routine also report improved empathy, 'sociability' and relational skills. While the clinical research focusing on ingesting larger dosages of psilocybin is rapidly growing and revealing great therapeutic potential for treating addiction, depression, and chronic disease, the long-term research on microdosing is still in progress, and the benefits and effects are in the process of being discovered.
  • How does microdosing feel?
About an hour or so after ingesting a microdose most people notice an increase in focus and energy. They may experience an increased sense of clarity or clear-mindedness, a lifted mood, as well as empathy and openess toward others. The effects are subjective and it's encouraged that each person pay attention to their own experience.
  • What's the best way to store mushroom microdoses?
Mushroom microdoses, which contain dried mushrooms, can be safely stored in a cool, dark, dry place and remain edible and potent for up to a few years. We recommend storing your microdoses in the fridge in an air-sealed container. A plastic pill jar, ziplock and/or paper bag, or mason jar are all good options. The potency loss is minimal to non-existent if there are low levels of light, moisture, and heat to affect the mushrooms chemically.
  • What is the science behind microdosing?
Much of what we understand about how psychedelics work involves serotonin, one of the brain’s most important neurotransmitters. Serotonin affects nearly everything we do, from how we feel to how we process information. Psilocybin shares a similar structure to serotonin and mimics the chemical’s effects. One of psilocybin’s main effects is to stimulate a serotonin receptor called 5-HT2A located in the prefrontal cortex, which leads to two important results: 1) The production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a protein that is "like Miracle-Gro for your brain." BDNF stimulates growth, connections and activity. 2) The increased transmission of Glutamate, a neurotransmitter responsible (in part) for important brain functions such as cognition, learning and memory. Psilocybin also causes parts of the brain that don’t usually communicate with one another to start interracting. These unique connections are formed by psilocybin's ability to dampen the activity of an often over-used part of the brain called the Default Mode Network (DMN). The DMN is responsible for many mental activities, including day-dreaming, self-reflection, and thinking about the past or the future. But research shows that a highly active DMN causes us to ruminate, over-analyze ourselves, and step out of the present moment to question the past and the future, all of which can make us unhappy. In fact, some studies suggest that depression is linked to an overactive DMN. This helps to explain why psilocybin shows potential in the treatment of depression and anxiety, as it effectively keeps you in the present moment, while also leading to insights and creative perspectives that may otherwise remain inaccessible. One trailblazing study on the effects of microdosing psilocybin was conducted by Prochazkova et al. (2018) and set out to investigate how a microdose of dried psilocybin mushrooms affected cognitive brain function in 36 study participants. The preliminary results of this study show that psychedelics positively affect cognitive functioning by optimizing the balance between cognitive persistence and flexibility. Researchers and professionals across many industries have incorporated microdosing into their daily routines, and the anecdotally reported benefits are overwhelming. However, microdosing is just beginning to be explored in academic studies and clinical trials, and we may have to wait a while longer for these findings to be published, and for more studies confirm the myriad psychological and physical benefits associated with psilocybin and microdosing. Until then, the responsibility lies with the individual to boldly explore this rapidly growing paradigm which is readily available to them, to feel their way forward into new and greater creative potentials and possibilities.
  • Can microdosing help with creativity?
Yes. There now exists both scientific and anecdotal evidence that psilocybin microdosing can enhance creativity, mental flexibility and problem solving. In a global study on psychedelic microdosing conducted by PhD students at York University and University of Toronto, the three most commonly reported benefits from microdosing participants were: improved mood, increased focus and enhanced creativity. Findings from the fascinating study, " Exploring the effect of microdosing psychedelics on creativity in an open-label natural setting " (Psychopharmacology, 2018) suggest that: "The use of minute doses of magic mushrooms and... psychedelic substances could induce a state of unconstrained thought that may produce more new, creative ideas. 'Microdosing' in this way may allow people to experience the creative benefits of psychedelic drugs without the risk of the so-called 'bad trips' that often come with high doses of such substances." The researchers were intrigued by this topic because microdosing has become popular among high-achieving Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and innovators. Proponents say the drug is non-toxic and not addictive, and helps with flexible thinking and creativity. But until now, the evidence has been anecdotal and scientists hadn’t directly studied psilocybin microdosing. This groundbreaking psilocybin microdosing study concluded that: "Based on these preliminary results, we speculate that psychedelics might affect cognitive metacontrol policies by optimizing the balance between cognitive persistence and flexibility. We hope this study will motivate future microdosing studies with more controlled designs to test this hypothesis." Amazing! One way that psilocybin microdosing increases creative capacity is through psilocybin's ability to dampen the activity of an often over-used part of the brain called the Default Mode Network (DMN). The DMN is responsible for many mental activities, including day-dreaming, self-reflection, and ruminating about the past or the future. Psilocybin switching off the DMN actually changes the connections between cortical regions and activates new modes, new sensations and thoughts, allowing us to “lose the inhibiting influence on one’s own narrative, which leads to insights that are kept from consciousness” (Carhart-Harris). A second way psilocybin benefits creativity is by targeting the serotonergic system (5-HT2A receptors) and hence improving mental flexibility, and aiding in breaking through rigid patterns of thought. Studies have displayed that 5-HT2A agonist activity correlates with an increase in associative learning and improvements in the ability to adapt behavior more flexibly. Other psilocybin studies have displayed the correlation between ingesting psilocybin and experiencing an increase in the personality trait "Openess". Studies have also shown that psilocybin can reduce symptoms associated with rigid behavior and thought patterns observed in obsessive-compulsive disorder. To conclude this short overview of the relationship between psilocybin microdosing and creativity, there now exists legitimate academic research- and mountains of anecdotal data- that suggests that psilocybin microdosing facilitates more flexible and less-constrained kinds of cognition. To all the creatives and artists out there, happy creating!
  • Can microdosing help with anxiety and depression?
Because of microdosing's relatively recent rise into public awareness, long term scientific studies on its potential benefits are currently lacking. However, many studies exist that show the potential for larger dose psilocybin therapy in treatment of depression, anxiety, addiction, OCD, PTSD, and more: Study #1: Clinical potential of psilocybin as a treatment for mental health conditions "Anxiety significantly decreased as measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory at 1 and 3 months posttreatment in the psilocybin group compared to niacin. Mood improved for 2 weeks after treatment and reached statistical significance on the Beck Depression Inventory at the 6-month point with the same comparison." "...these studies all show potentially positive benefits with minimal safety concerns for psilocybin use in suicidality, anxiety disorders, OCD, alcohol use disorder, and tobacco use disorder with improvement in target symptoms." Study #2: Role of psilocybin in the treatment of depression "Psilocybin was well tolerated by all patients, and no serious or unexpected adverse events were reported. Relative to baseline, depressive symptoms were markedly reduced at 1 week and at 3 months after treatment." "Thus, although limited, the current evidence base suggests that psilocybin may prove to be a safe, feasible, and efficacious pharmacological agent for depression, at least in patients not responding to conventional therapies." Study #3: Rapid and sustained symptom reduction following psilocybin treatment for anxiety and depression in patients with life-threatening cancer: a randomized controlled trial "...psilocybin produced immediate, substantial, and sustained improvements in anxiety and depression and led to decreases in cancer-related demoralization and hopelessness, improved spiritual wellbeing, and increased quality of life. At the 6.5-month follow-up, psilocybin was associated with enduring anxiolytic and anti-depressant effects (approximately 60–80% of participants continued with clinically significant reductions in depression or anxiety), sustained benefits in existential distress and quality of life, as well as improved attitudes towards death." "In conjunction with psychotherapy, single moderate-dose psilocybin produced rapid, robust and enduring anxiolytic and anti-depressant effects in patients with cancer-related psychological distress."
